This Week In Tyranny

This week there were only two stories I wanted to highlight - first the welcome news that “Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD), the House Majority Leader, postponed a press conference announcing new reforms of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act after progressive lawmakers banded together and said they would fight any legislation that did not include a set of eight principles on wiretapping that preserve the ‘rule of law.’”

Second is Brandon Mayfield’s lawsuit to overturn portions of the Patriot Act.  Excerpt:

By repeatedly lying to the nation and to the courts, by extending government secrecy to new heights, and by pushing its constitutional and statutory authority to the furthest imaginable limits, the Bush administration has forfeited the trust of the courts. Judges of all political stripes simply no longer believe government assurances. Trust us, the government said, Mayfield’s the guy; he wasn’t. Trust us, we won’t abuse national security letters; they did. Trust us, we don’t torture; they do.

The courts have been fairly consistent in pushing back against the administration.  Good on ‘em.
